Updated 12/14/09:

I Hate The Damn Sleep Country Calendar

Why haven’t they upgraded this terrible feature?  It’s been the same graphic since I was in middle school.

Dr. Ray Timothy, the Superintendent of Schools of the Park City School District, after consultation with the Park City Board of Education and health professionals throughout the state, has closed, effective immediately, all eight schools in the Park City School District. This action was taken as a proactive and precautionary measure after the identification of three students possibly infected with the Swine Flu. Confirmation of the virus is pending CDC laboratory testing.

All Park City School District facilities including the District Office will remain closed at least through Monday, May 4. All school-related activities for this period are canceled. School Administrators are expected to be at their building to make sure no students are dropped off and left. Staff should not report to work.

Updates and additional information will be posted to this Park City School District website as they become available.

I’m not really all that concerned, but it sure makes my recent swine flu jokes a little less funny.  I hope that it doesn’t spread much further.  And I hope they also discover that bagels are the cure for swine flu.

Still funny.

Getting Ready To Bike

My garage is starting to look pretty cool. Messy, but lots of toys and guy stuff... some that even get some use occasionally.

My garage is starting to look pretty cool. Messy, but lots of toys and guy stuff... some that even get some use occasionally.

From MikeKisow.com:

I spent some time with Adam this week preparing the bikes (both new and old) for the upcoming season. Three flats, some new tires, new bar ends, a good washing, storage concerns, cleaned some water bottles, registered bikes with the local police department, and many other standard bike owner activities. My excitement for biking will have to wait a while longer as we are expecting 10-20 inches of snow tonight. Solitude should be great tomorrow! Stay tuned.

This site makes me laugh for a few minutes.  My laughter is followed shortly by a few minutes of astonishment when I realize these pictures are of actual people.  My astonishment slowly turns to confusion when I attempt to figure out where these people come from.  Anger follows close behind.  Finally, I start feeling a little nauseus and I quickly Google something completely unrelated or check TramDock again.  I then shake my head in dismay for a few more minutes.

Opening Day

The M’s wire-to-wire championship run starts today as they take on the Twins.

King Felix v.  Francisco Liriano

Go M’s.  Only 2 1/2 hours til first pitch.  Hopefully the first pitch is better than the one thrown out by Cincinnati’s Mayor a few years back:

Decorated big mountain skier and BASE jumper Shane McConkey was killed earlier today in a ski-BASE accident in the Italian Dolomites.

A member of the Red Bull Air Force and pioneer of the ski-BASE-ing phenomenon, McConkey experienced problems in the air after launching off a cliff with the expectation of deploying his parachute canopy and then gliding down to the ground—as he had done successfully some 700-plus times before.

“He did a double backflip off the jump and he has these releasable bindings so they come off in the air and then he flies off in his wing suit,” filmmaker Scott Gaffney, a longtime close friend of McConkey’s, told ESPN Action Sports in an interview this afternoon via phone.

“But one ski did not come off. And when that happens the drag on the skis causes you to flip over, so the skis go over your head. So he was struggling with the one ski. Then he also got into a bad spin. So he may have never even pulled his pilot chute. And that’s coming from JT Holmes, who Shane was with in Italy and who reviewed the footage of the accident. So the combination of the ski, the spin and the pilot chute, apparently. Because you can’t throw the pilot chute like that; if you throw it while you’re upside down and it wraps around the ski, you’re done.”

McConkey was filming with Matchstick Productions and Red Bull at the time, according to Gaffney, who said McConkey apparently died on impact with snow on the ground below the cliff. Gaffney was not clear about the size of the cliff. “But it had to be a sizable cliff, at least 400 feet, for him to be planning on flying his wing suit away from it,” Gaffney said.McConkey, 39, of Olympic Valley, Calif., is survived by his wife, Sherry, and their 3½-year-old daughter, Ayla.

This afternoon Gaffney was at home in Squaw Valley, Calif., with his brother, Robb, also a close friend of McConkey’s, reeling from the news. “With what Shane does,” said Scott, “it’s a call you always picture getting at some point, but you realistically don’t ever expect it to happen.”

Added Robb Gaffney, “Shane’s been a part of our lives for quite a while now. I’m just sitting at Scott’s house processing the whole thing. The texts and calls are coming in, and you can really even feel it in the air in Squaw right now. I’m thinking about Sherry and his little girl. But in this area people have always loved Shane, so Sherry and Ayla, they’re going to have an immense amount of support around them. That’s one thing for sure; that’s Shane’s legacy.”

Packing For Tahoe

I’m starting to put together some stuff for Tahoe.  I don’t leave until Tuesday, which seems like way too much thinking ahead for my own good.  But my parents will be driving out tomorrow and I figured my skis, poles, and gear are safer with them than they are with Delta.

Like most ski trips I plan, I am leaving town just as the storms hit Utah.  Luckily, Tahoe is expecting a decent amount of snow the four days I’m there.  And the skiing should be good when I get back… hopefully.

Having never skied Tahoe before, I’m not sure what to expect.  I hope to make it to Heavenly, Squaw, and Kirkwood.  We’re staying in Genoa, NV, not sure if that limits my options.  We’ll see.  I might even do some gambling.  Help pay for the trip.

Pretty boring post.  Picture of South Lake Tahoe:
