Ski Day #58

Matt and I skied Snowbird again on Wednesday. The storm had let up a little and we enjoyed a bell-to-bell powder day. I think storm totals reached two feet that morning.

The Pink Pants-er... get it?

Kyle Sadelson aka The Pink Pantser… get it? Like Pink Panther. Get it?

Oh, Kyle joined us for a few laps. We hiked Baldy and jumped off some stuff. Keyhole was the best run of the day. Tram laps are exhausting by the way. 3000 vertical every run. And no sitting down and relaxing on the way up. I was sore.

Ski Day #57

Closing day parties were a lot of fun, but the season really didn’t end on April 14th. In fact, it snowed a ton the next day. Matt and I found ourselves at Snowbird with at least a foot of new snow. It didn’t stop snowing either. It was full on winter. I wore a puffy jacket. Oh, and the snow was dry. The conditions definitely felt more like February than late April. Don’t believe me? See for yourself…

It kept snowing and we kept skiing, jumping off things and taking pictures.

Right before jumping off this little tree stump I turned to Matt and stated how much more I enjoy skiing than mountain biking. I wish this winter would just keep going. Biking can wait.

Ski Edit #12: Guide to Skiing Canyons Backcountry

A few clips of each of my favorite areas in the backcountry accessed from Canyons Resort: Dutch Draw, Square Top, Cinder Chutes, Big Mac, Powder Puff, South Square, Corn Bowl, and West Monitor. We didn’t get a ton of snow this season, but it’s been one of the best I can remember.

Ski Day #56: Closing Day at Canyons, Closing Day Party at PCMR

I worked in the morning and joined a big group of friends for closing day at Canyons. I prefer closing day with the Park City locals at PCMR, but we decided to make the most of the last day at Canyons. I think we succeeded.

On a personal note, I skied without a knee brace for the first time since tearing my MCL. I’m still not fully recovered ar anything, it just didn’t fit under my Roffe ski pants. I actually survived a park lap with a bit of a buzz too.

What a fun way to end a great season at Canyons. Most of my best days involved backcountry skiing from the top of 9990. It’s not technically inbounds, but it’s accessed from Canyons. Canyons has also served up some memorable Sundays and some tasty Jalapeno Margaritas. I’m excited to have another season’s pass next ski season.

After a quick detour to the hospital (long story), we wound up at the closing day party at Park City Mountain Resort. Between beers at Cornerstore, parking lot Bratwursts, a keg in the tuning room at a ski shop, and cocktails at Legend’s, we managed to have a pretty good time. Great day!

I’ll wrap it up with a quote from one of my favorite ski writers:

It was a below average snow year, but an above average fun year!!! – Apres Adam

Ski Edit #10: Sunny Friday in the Backcountry

March 1, 2013. We started hiking under some grey, overcast skies. As we reached the top of McDonald’s Draw, the sun broke through. We spent the next few hours hiking and riding in the sun before I had to go to work. I skied some fun lines in untracked snow and got sunburned. Does it get any better?

Ski Day #55

Liz, Matt, and I went for a tour out of Canyons. It wound up being the last time I would skin out of Canyons this season. What as season it was for Canyons sidecountry Canyons lift accessed backcountry skiing. It was a below average snow year, but an above average fun year!!! That should be listed on some famous quotes website.

We started the day with some turns in Desolation Lake. The snow quality had deteriorated quickly from the amazing conditions around the Wasatch the previous day (Day #54). Liz and I still managed a few fun turns through the woods. Just our luck, Matt was standing right there with a camera. He was able to snap off a few pictures as if the whole thing had been a planned event.

More photos! The candid shots are always the best!

We wound up skinning all the way back to the top of Dutch Draw. The views were fantastic.

The snow temperatures changed quickly and before long we were having trouble even moving across the snow with our frozen skins acting as magnets to the snow (assuming the snow has opposite polarity or whatever). We skinned for a few hours before finding a new area that none of us had ever skied.

We skied a really fun, off fall line slope called McBerny’s or something. The snow was surprisingly good. It wound up being well worth the time we spent getting there. A day to remember for sure.

Ski Day #54

Word Press stopped letting me embed pictures into my blog, so I kind of lost interest after a few unsuccessful posts. Plus, I’ve been busy. I’ll now try to recreate the last month…

Umm….. Day #54…. On April 9th I skied at Solitude with Chris Gold. It was the last Soli-Tuesday of the season and it was a good one.

Last Soli-Tuesday of the season. One of the best powder days of the year!

Pictures are working again! Hell yeah!

Ski Day #53

I worked Sunday morning and tried to get to Canyons for some spring skiing. I missed the sun and almost didn’t make it to the hill. Actually, I sat in the parking lot listening to a Mariner’s game for a half hour before some friends convinced me the skiing wasn’t as bad as the flat light, warm wind, and rain indicated it would be.

Upon reaching the top of the gondola, I was rewarded with a shot of Fireball. We skied down Doc’s Run, then shared a pitcher at Umbrella Bar. Not my best ski day of the season, but not a bad day either.
