Ski Day #45

Liz, Gold, and I skied Canyons. A bunch of wind, snow throughout the day, and whiteout conditions at the top of 9990 prevented us from our planned day of hiking to McDonald’s Draw in the Canyons sidecountry. We wound up hiking 9990 and playing around on the cornice, bowl, and Red Pine Chutes. The snow was actually pretty good until an ice storm moved in. We called it a day and headed home soaking wet.

Terrible News From The PNW

Four Dead In Separate Avalanches at Stevens and Snoqualmie Passes – Seattle Times

Avalanches less than an hour apart claimed four lives at two separate resorts Sunday — one burying three skiers at Stevens Pass ski resort and another sweeping a snowboarder off a cliff at The Summit at Snoqualmie.

All four were in out-of-bounds areas of the resorts.

At about 11:30 a.m., a snowboarder at Alpental, one of four areas at The Summit at Snoqualmie resort, was with two friends when he triggered an avalanche that caused him to fall about 500 feet over a cliff, authorities say. The snowboarder was a 41-year-old Seattle man who has not been identified.

Twelve skiers in an ungroomed, out-of-bounds area at Stevens Pass resort were caught in an avalanche just after noon. Three of them did not respond to CPR and died, said Katie Larson, a spokeswoman with the King County Sheriff’s Office.

The bodies of all three, men in their 30s or 40s who were experienced skiers, were removed from the area Sunday afternoon.

“It’s nature,” Larson said. “I don’t want to make it seem trite, but sometimes nature is bigger than we are.”

2012 – Ski Edit #5: V-Day Ski Day At Solitude

I originally uploaded this video featuring the Black Keys song “Howlin’ For You.” Unfortunately, the record label that owns Black Keys doesn’t allow for third party usage on YouTube. So, my video contained no audio. I already deleted the iMovie file on my laptop, so I was stuck with finding a song of similar length. I found this K-os song, it kinda works. You’ll have to take my word for it, but the original song worked really well (I guess if you wanted to you could play “Howlin’ For You” on Spotify while muting the K-os song).

Either way, check out this video of Gold and I skiing  four Honeycomb Canyon laps at Solitude on Valentine’s Day, “I Wish I Knew Natalie Portman Edition.”

Ski Day #44

I wrote up my summary for Ski Day #43 assuming my week of powder skiing was finished. But after waking up early and not feeling as sore from my Thursday crash as expected, I met up with The Mongoose, Powderhound Matt, and Ferrari for a little Canyons sidecountry touring. We hiked 9990, skied down to the saddle, bootpacked Dutch’s, traversed past McDonald’s Draw, and skinned to the top of West Monitor. We reached the top a couple hours after hopping on the Cabriolet from the parking area.

We got some great turns down the face. Then we skinned back up through the aspens and dropped into a little powder field before re-entering Canyons. Awesome day.

Great Week in Review updated:

  • Sunday – it snowed a foot and I worked
  • Monday – I skied Brighton and jumped a bunch of cliffs
  • Tuesday – I skied four powdery Honeycomb laps
  • Wednesday – I skied Corn Bowl in Canyons backcountry three times
  • Thursday – I skied Dutch’s Draw and Corn Bowl
  • Friday – Skinned and skied West Monitor

Ski Day #43

Gold and I skied Canyons again today. We hiked a couple times. Our first hike was to the top of Dutch’s Draw, my first time skiing that area this season. The second was back to Corn Bowl and into the lower half of Cinder Chutes. The snow was great on Dutch’s, a little set up on Corn Bowl, and deep in Cinder Chutes. Aside from a pretty good tumble I took on some rocks, it was a great day to cap off an awesome week of skiiing.

One storm dropped a foot on Sunday. One inch of new on Tuesday. One new inch today. I somehow turned 14 inches of snow into four awesome powder days. Pretty efficient use of resources if you ask me.

Ski Day #42

Gold and I did some hiking and sidecountry skiing at Canyons on Wednesday. We hiked to Corn Bowl three times. Following this route each time:

Avoid beginners on Chicane -> Tomstone Lift  -> 9990 Lift -> Hike 9990 -> traverse to Squaretop -> hike Squaretop -> hike across Squaretop -> traverse to Corn Bowl -> sidestep up to top of Corn Bowl -> ski Corn Bowl and runout -> skate red pine road

Each lap takes a little over an hour. I can’t remember the last time I fell asleep so early.

We skied some awesome powder. And we didn’t start a single avalanche. Best backcountry skiing day of the year.

2012 – Ski Edit #4

Monday Funday at Brighton. Millicent has to be one of the best chairlifts in the world. The terrain is so much fun. Good snow, lots of stuff to jump off, and high speed. I might have to get a midweek pass at Brighton next season.
