Terrible News From The PNW

Four Dead In Separate Avalanches at Stevens and Snoqualmie Passes – Seattle Times

Avalanches less than an hour apart claimed four lives at two separate resorts Sunday — one burying three skiers at Stevens Pass ski resort and another sweeping a snowboarder off a cliff at The Summit at Snoqualmie.

All four were in out-of-bounds areas of the resorts.

At about 11:30 a.m., a snowboarder at Alpental, one of four areas at The Summit at Snoqualmie resort, was with two friends when he triggered an avalanche that caused him to fall about 500 feet over a cliff, authorities say. The snowboarder was a 41-year-old Seattle man who has not been identified.

Twelve skiers in an ungroomed, out-of-bounds area at Stevens Pass resort were caught in an avalanche just after noon. Three of them did not respond to CPR and died, said Katie Larson, a spokeswoman with the King County Sheriff’s Office.

The bodies of all three, men in their 30s or 40s who were experienced skiers, were removed from the area Sunday afternoon.

“It’s nature,” Larson said. “I don’t want to make it seem trite, but sometimes nature is bigger than we are.”

2012 – Ski Edit #5: V-Day Ski Day At Solitude

I originally uploaded this video featuring the Black Keys song “Howlin’ For You.” Unfortunately, the record label that owns Black Keys doesn’t allow for third party usage on YouTube. So, my video contained no audio. I already deleted the iMovie file on my laptop, so I was stuck with finding a song of similar length. I found this K-os song, it kinda works. You’ll have to take my word for it, but the original song worked really well (I guess if you wanted to you could play “Howlin’ For You” on Spotify while muting the K-os song).

Either way, check out this video of Gold and I skiing  four Honeycomb Canyon laps at Solitude on Valentine’s Day, “I Wish I Knew Natalie Portman Edition.”

2012 – Ski Edit #4

Monday Funday at Brighton. Millicent has to be one of the best chairlifts in the world. The terrain is so much fun. Good snow, lots of stuff to jump off, and high speed. I might have to get a midweek pass at Brighton next season.

Ted Ligety Beat Me To It

video from: TedLigety.com

I made an edit a couple weeks ago featuring powder skiing at Canyons and the song “Somebody That I Used To Know,” by Gotye. Last week I bought a new pair of skis, Head Carlos 125′s, for $200 on SteepAndCheap.

Today, I found an edit on Ted Ligety’s blog featuring powder skiing to the same song on the skis I just bought (he also used a Two Door Cinema Club song I was planning on using for a future edit). It was uploaded January 11th, two weeks before my edit. His featured powder skiing in Europe, mine was at Canyons.

Here’s a few other areas where Ted Ligety might have me beat, via Ted Ligety.com:
