2012 – Ski Edit #18
March 27: The end of March snow forecast looked pretty weak for Utah, so Gold and I decided to drive to Squaw Valley. The National Weather Service predicted 11-25″ of snow overnight and into the following day. At 3pm we decided to drive to Tahoe. We packed and left by 6pm. Made it to Reno a little after midnight. Got a $35 a night hotel room.
March 28: Woke up, drove up to snowy Tahoe and Squaw Valley. It had snowed 11″ overnight. Probably 14-15″ by the time the lifts opened. The top of the mountain was on wind hold for the day, so we spent the day lapping KT in a wet, snowy, white out. Pretty fun day though. We got a room in Tahoe City for $85. Hot tubbed. And I slept for 12 hours.
March 29: The top of the mountain opened and we skied some really fun wind buff on Siberia, and Headwall. We hiked Palisades in the worst wind I’ve ever seen. My helmet cam ripped completely off my helmet somewhere along the hike, never to be seen again. We jumped some cliffs on Granite Chief. Ripped some more wind buff turns. And drove back to Park City. We got home around 11pm.
Then I got the flu for three days.

Gold and I skied 4″ or so of dust on crust (as we locals like to call it… it’s an inside joke). I didn’t expect much, but it turned into a pretty awesome day. We were the only ones in Honeycomb for most of the day. We skied some untouched lines. The snow was smooth and fast, just enough to float about the layer of crust a few inches down. Super fun day.

Steal my skis. but you can’t steal my powder – Ski Utah Blog
At that moment I was in full on in shock. I don’t have kids but I honestly felt like someone had just kidnapped my entire family. Rage, anger, sadness, disappointment and panic ran throughout my body. Within the next few minutes, I happened to run into the entire Ski Utah Crew and being the optimists that they are, they all expressed their sympathy for my situation but they tried to tell me to try and not let this ruin my day. “Just rent some skis and we will figure this out.” FIGURE THIS OUT? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Someone just stole my three best friends and by extension my passion. I was enraged!!!
The next step was to admit defeat for the day but by God there was no way in HELL I was not going be skiing tomorrow. The gauntlet had been thrown down and the challenge was on!
2012 – Ski Edit #15
Byron, Gold, Sam, and I skied Solitude. After a 40″ storm the previous days, it snowed another five inches overnight and turned bluebird by first chair. We skied some runs on Summit until the patrol dropped the rope to the East Face of Honeycomb. We skied four awesome laps before our legs gave out. Such a great day!
