Mountain Biking Day #7

Day From Hell

Just woke up following one of the hardest days of my life. Yesterday, Mike, Bill, Gold, Hobbes, and I attempted to complete the Bald Mountain Loop. We started from my house, headed up the trail, through the new development, and up Switchback Trail. After blazing a trail through the woods, we connected with the forest road leading up the Microwave Towers at the top of Parley’s Summit. We eventually reached the towers just an hour and a half from when we started, having gained 1,000 feet of vertical over 3 miles.

The next part of the ride took us along the Great Western Trail, the trail stretching from Canada to Mexico used by both the Mormons and the Donner Party (one can only wonder what the U.S. would look like today if the Donner Party made it, while the Mormons ate themselves…).

View of Parley’s and Immigration Canyons.

We accidentally followed the wrong path for a bit, resulting in an additional half-mile of riding, but also some good pictures from the mountains dividing Park City and Salt Lake.

We then followed the Great Western Trail over Bald Mountain and some other hills on our way to Big Mountain Pass. This part of the ride was 7.6 miles, with over 2,000 feet of climbing. We reached Big Mountain Pass around 6:45, five hours and 10+ miles from when we started. Bill was experiencing cramping, Gold was tired (mainly due to four hours of non-stop bitching), Mike and I were exhausted, and Hobbes, the only one of us with water, was done for the day.

After unsuccessfully attempting to arrange a ride back to the house, Mike and I decided to ride home and get the car. Little Immigration Trail was too muddy to ride, so we wound up riding down U-65 for 5.3 miles of downhill on paved roads, followed by 6 more miles of East Canyon Road. Just two miles from home Bill (who had hitched a ride back to the house) showed up with the car.

In all I rode 22 miles and Mike 24. 6 1/2 hours total. I’m never doing it again.

Update: I created a new album with pics from Bald Mountain Loop. Check them out on my Photobucket page.

Mountain Biking Day #6

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

Just finishing up dinner after an exhausting ride around the Jeremy Ranch area. We left the house at 4:50 on our way back up the Switchback Trail. Yesterday’s run got us pumped to try to do a couple laps this time. We reached the end of the trail a little less than an hour later.

Hobbes carried his doggy-pack full of water and treats.

The trails were a little muddy, so the ride down was a little slower and sketchier than yesterday. I had to bail twice due to the mud, once on a switchback, the other into a tree. Still a great ride. 50 minutes up, 5 minutes down.

Mike and I decided to take a different route up for the second ride. We got sidetracked several times during the trip, each time taking a trail or road even higher towards the top of Parley’s. Eventually we made out way to the cell towers at the top of Parley’s Summit, 7,696 feet above sea level.

It took us a little while to get back home. But 1,000 vertical feet later, we were back in the driveway. 3 hours, and close to 10 miles roundtrip. Mike, Hobbes, and I are beat (but not too beat that Hobbes couldn’t attack two dogs on the trail).

Mountain Biking Day #5

Mike and I just got back from an awesome biking trip in Jeremy Ranch. Shortly after watching the President fly overhead, we grabbed Hobbes and our matching Specialized bikes and made our way toward Moose Hollow. After exploring Moose Hollow and Main-gy Moose Trail, we started our climb up the new Switch Back Trail.

Me and my new bike on The Avenues

It took nearly an hour and a half to summit, but we were rewarded with 15 minutes of awesome downhill all the way to my driveway. No pictures or video of any of the downhill. However, I’m looking into a helmet-cam for biking and skiing. Maybe even a helmet cam for Hobbes. I’m sure he’s not the steadiest filmogropher, but he can’t be any worse than my roommate Bill.

Utah was visited today by President Bush. My home just happened to be on the air route between Park City and Salt Lake. Mike and I took pictures while Hobbes secured his portion of the Presidential Flight Path. Check out some of my pictures:

Mountain Biking Day #4

Mike and I decided to bike from Park Meadows to Trailside via Round Valley and back. Hobbes and Tracker joined us for the ride. Pretty good ride. A lot of challenging climbs and some really fun single-track. I ran into some problems with my left crank and bottom bracket, but was able to make it through the 8-plus mile ride. Fun, but tiring day.

Finished the day off by taking the Gary Fisher to White Pine for repairs. And wound up buying a new bike, a new Specialized Rockhopper.

Ski Day #54 / Mountain Biking Day #3

Saturday, May 24th, 2008

Today might be one of my all-time favorites. And it all started, as most good things do, with a Sunrise Bagel from Park City Bread and Bagel. After attending Mogul’s obedience class (extreme!), I made my way to Snowbird for a little Memorial Day weekend skiing.

Ski Day #54

I was a little hesitant to ski today following yesterday’s white-out. But by the time I left the tunnel connecting Peruvian to Mineral Basin, the weather had cleared. The snow was still in pretty good shape. It’s amazing to see how much snow is still around. The conditions are better now that at any point during the 2006-2007 season.

I skied by myself for the first five runs of the day, most of them on White Diamond in Mineral Basin. Eventually, I ran into my Conrad under the Mineral Basin Lift. He was skiing with a posse of Flippy Spinny Kids. We made a few laps, jumping rocks, wind lips, cat tracks, and a couple cliffs. Check out the video of Conrad’s three off the wind lip:

Mountain Biking Day #3

After a great day on the hill, Mike, Bill, Chris Gold, and I headed over to the Trailside Skills Park. We were a lot more successful today, not having to deal with the rain and mud. Chris Gold had a great crash on one of the trial features. He went over the bars at the highest point, crashing head first into some bushes and rocks below.

I got the courage up to jump some small cliff-like features. Nothing to write home about, but then again I haven’t really biked much since I got my driver’s license. Check out the video of me jumping the black diamond-rated section:

Mountain Biking Day #2

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

Mike and I grabbed our bikes and headed out to the Trailside Skills Park. Probably not the best idea to ride in the cold rain, following a couple inches of snow, but it turned out ok. We got to ride a bunch of the features before the conditions got too bad. I took a pretty good spill on or way out. Luckily the track was muddy enough that I simply slid to a muddy stop.

Me After Our Mud-Biking Trip

After biking, we grabbed some beverages and hopped a fence at the Cove to get into the hot tub. Morning snow, mountain biking, drinks and a hot tub. Not a bad day. Oh, and Snowbird got 17 inches in the last 48 hours. With another 6 inches or so on the way. I’ve never skied powder on May 23rd, should be fun.

Mountain Biking Day #1

Friday, May 16th, 2008

Mike and I rode our bikes out to a farm on Jeremy Ranch Road/Mormon Flats Road/East Canyon Road. Nothing extreme but it was a good ride, 6.5 miles roundtrip. Hobbes and Tracker did a pretty good job keeping up. That was until we stopped at the farm to check out a couple pygmy cows, some pygmy donkeys, two pygmy sheep, some regular-sized horses, and a Great Pyrenees that looked like a bleached Hobbes. It’s also worth noting that the Great Pyrenees was taller than everything but the horses.

On our way back to the car, Mike and I stopped at a culvert to let the dogs swim. Tracker made the mistake of getting too close to the culvert and was sucked in. A few seconds later he shot out the other side into a natural pool area. Within the next 30 minutes Tracker had successfully completed the “shoot-the-tube” five times. Hobbes, who is terrified of water, was tricked/pushed into body-surfing the culvert once. Even Mike and I risked potential hypothermia to shoot-the-tube. No pictures or video, but we’ll get some next time. Because we will definitely be doing it again. Until then, enjoy some pictures of Hobbes and the farm animals:
